What Wooden Toys Actually Cost in Bangalore
Parents hesitate over wooden toys because nobody puts a number on them. Every listing says "premium" and hides the price behind a cart. So here are our shelf bands, in the open. These are BugBee's bands. Another shop will differ, and you should ask them the same question.
| Range | Typical age | Price band |
|---|---|---|
| Small puzzles and single peg boards | 1 to 3 years | ₹199 to ₹399 |
| Alphabet and number boards | 2 to 5 years | ₹299 to ₹599 |
| Tracing boards and writing prep | 3 to 6 years | ₹399 to ₹799 |
| Regional language boards (Hindi, Tamil, Kannada) | 3 to 7 years | ₹399 to ₹899 |
| Activity triangles and multi-part toys | 1 to 4 years | ₹599 to ₹1,199 |
| Wooden block sets and building games | 3 to 9 years | ₹499 to ₹1,499 |
Bulk pricing starts once you cross a full carton. See the bulk section further down for how that works.
Why wood costs more than plastic, and why that is not a rip-off
A plastic toy is poured into a mould in seconds and the mould lasts for years. A wooden toy is cut, sanded, drilled, painted and finished, and each step is done by a person. On top of that, a good wooden toy uses non-toxic paint and a child-safe finish, which costs more than the bright industrial paint on a plastic toy. You are not paying for the material alone. You are paying for the fact that it will survive being thrown across a room by a two year old, and then be handed down.
Affordable Wooden Toys: What a Lower Price Actually Buys You
Plenty of shops advertise affordable wooden toys and then send you something that is technically wood and practically cardboard. So it is worth being precise about what the word should mean, because affordable and cheap are not the same promise.
An affordable wooden toy is one where nothing important was cut. The wood is solid, the paint is safe, the edges are sanded, and it will still be in one piece after a year of a toddler using it as a hammer. Cheap means one of those four things was skipped, and you usually find out which one about three weeks after the birthday. Our wooden toys affordable band starts at ₹199, and that ₹199 board is a properly finished piece of solid wood, not an MDF cut-out with a printed wood pattern on it.
Where the corner gets cut, in order
1. The final sanding. It is the cheapest step to skip and the fastest one to notice with your hand.
2. The paint. Industrial paint costs a fraction of child-safe paint and looks brighter.
3. The wood itself, swapped from solid to MDF, which is why the toy feels light.
4. The thickness, shaved down until a drop on a tiled floor splits it.
If a wooden toy is dramatically cheaper than everything else on the shelf, at least one of those four has happened. Ask which.
The honest answer to whether wood is worth it at the bottom of the price range: yes, but only just above the bottom. At ₹199 to ₹399 you get a real wooden toy that does one job well. Below that, you are usually buying the idea of wood instead of the thing.
How to Tell Real Wood From MDF in 60 Seconds
This is the single most useful thing a parent can learn about wooden toys, and almost nobody explains it. MDF is sawdust and glue pressed into a board. It is not a bad material, and plenty of safe toys use it. But it is not the solid wood a shop might imply, and it does not survive a drop on a tiled floor the way solid wood does. Here is the test, in the order that works fastest.
Solid wood is heavier than it looks. If a board the size of your palm feels light and hollow, you are probably holding MDF or plywood. This one check catches most of the fakes before you look at anything else.
This is where you win. Solid wood edge shows a continuous grain running off the side. MDF edge looks like compressed cardboard, grey-beige and slightly fuzzy, often with a painted or laminated strip covering it. Turn the toy sideways and look at the thin face.
Real grain does not stop and start. On MDF the surface pattern is printed, so it repeats, or it stops dead at a joint, or it disappears under a thick coat of paint. Run your eye along the length of the board.
Solid wood gives a dull knock with a slight ring. MDF gives a flat, dead thud with no tone at all. It sounds like tapping a stack of paper. Try it on two toys side by side and you will never need to guess again.
A shop that knows its stock will answer instantly: rubberwood, neem, pine, beech. A shop that says "it is wood" and changes the subject does not know. That answer tells you more than the toy does. Ask it before you ask the price.
BugBee team: Confirm the wood species you actually stock, and the finish you use. If you cannot answer the species question above, fix that before publishing this page, because customers will now ask.
What to Check Before You Buy, Beyond the Wood
The wood is only half the story. A beautifully made wooden toy with unsafe paint is a worse purchase than a plain plastic one. These are the four things worth checking, in plain language.
The paint and the finish
Non-toxic, water-based paint is what you want on anything a child might put in their mouth, which is everything at some point. If a painted wooden toy smells strongly of solvent when you open it, let it air out, and think twice before giving it to a teething baby. Bare or oiled wood with no paint at all is the safest option for under-one-year-olds.
Small parts on a young child's toy
Anything that fits inside a toilet roll tube is a choking risk for a child under three. On a wooden toy that usually means loose pegs, small knobs or a detachable piece. Check by pulling hard on every protrusion before you hand it over. If it moves, it will come off eventually.
Splinters and rough edges
Run your bare hand along every edge and into every cutout. Cheap wooden toys skip the final sanding step, and that is where splinters live. Your fingers will find it faster than your eyes will. A good wooden toy should feel almost slippery on the edges.
The safety mark on the box
In India, toys carry a BIS mark under a compulsory certification scheme, and the packaging carries an age recommendation. Take the age warning at face value: it exists because of the choking risk, not because the manufacturer wants to sell you a second toy later. If the box has no age marking at all, treat it as under-three-unsafe.
The Six Wooden Ranges We Keep on the Shelf
We do not stock every wooden toy made in India. We stock six families, and we go deep on each instead of listing a hundred things we have never held. Here is what each one is actually for.
Wooden activity triangles
A triangle or cube with a bead maze on top, shape sorters on the sides, and turning gears. This is the one wooden toy that genuinely grows with the child, because a nine-month-old reaches for the beads and a three-year-old works out the shapes. Ours is a five-in-one unit, which is why it is the top of our price band. If you are buying one wooden toy for a first birthday and want the money to count, this is where it goes.
Alphabet and number boards
Letter boards, number boards, and combination boards with both. The good ones have a chunky knob on each piece so a two-year-old can grip it, and the letters are recessed so the piece only fits one way. That self-correcting design is the whole point. A board where the letters can go anywhere teaches nothing.
Regional language boards
This is the range we are quietly proudest of, and the one almost nobody else in Bangalore keeps on a shelf. Hindi Varnamala boards, Tamil alphabet boards, Kannada options. If your child is learning to read in a script you did not grow up with, or if you want them to learn the one you did, a physical board beats an app, because there is nothing else to swipe to.
Tracing boards
Grooved boards a child traces with a wooden stylus, following the shape of a letter, a number or a pattern. It is writing practice without the frustration of pencil and paper, and the groove does the correcting. Parents often tell us this is the one that made their child stop avoiding writing practice, and it is the range that gets bought for slightly older children than the rest.
Peg boards and knob puzzles
The workhorse of the whole category. Fruits, vegetables, animals, body parts, shapes and numbers, each as a wooden board with a peg on every piece. They teach grip, matching and vocabulary, and they are quiet, which matters more than any catalogue admits. If you want a first wooden toy that costs under ₹400 and will be used every day for a year, start here.
Block sets and building games
Wooden block towers, stacking games and strategy games like tic tac toe. These are the toys that get played with longest, because there is no correct answer to work out and no level to finish. A block set is also the best value in the shop per hour of use, and the one we most often see parents buy two of, one for home and one for the grandparents' house.
The Classic Wooden Toys Parents Ask For by Name
There is a small canon of wooden toys that have survived fifty years of plastic, and parents walk in and ask for them by name. Here is each one, what it actually teaches, and an honest note on whether it is on our shelf right now. A shop that claims to have everything has not checked its own shelf recently.
Wooden stacker toy
Rings on a post, usually five, sized so the biggest goes at the bottom. It looks like the simplest toy in the shop and it is doing more than any other piece at that age: size order, colour naming, and the hand control to get a ring over a post without knocking the tower down. Ours is a five ring rocking stacker that tilts as the child plays, which adds a second problem to solve. This is the single best first birthday wooden toy, and the one most likely to still be in use two years later.
Hammer and ball toy
A wooden bench with balls that get knocked through holes with a mallet. Every toddler wants to hit things, and this is the version that gives them somewhere to do it. It builds wrist control and cause and effect: the mallet swings, the ball drops, something happens. We do not currently keep one on the shelf, and it is the item we get asked for most often after the stacker. If you want one, message us and we will tell you honestly whether we can source it rather than send you somewhere else.
Wood airplane toy
Planes, trains, buses and cars are the toys that move, and moving toys get played with differently from static ones because they invite a story. We cover this through a nine piece transport puzzle with easy pull knobs, so a two year old can lift the plane, the bus and the train out, name them and put them back. If you want a standalone wood airplane toy you can fly across a room, that is a different product and we would rather tell you than sell you the puzzle twice.
Cutting vegetables toy
This one is a play kitchen set where food is held together with velcro and sliced apart with a wooden knife. It is pretend play, and pretend play is where vocabulary and sequencing come from: first we cut, then we cook, then we eat. We stock the vegetable side of this differently, as an open ended vegetable knob puzzle, which teaches naming and matching rather than slicing. Both are good. They are not the same toy, and a parent buying for a three year old who wants to cook should know which one they are getting.
Toy ramp racer
A wooden tower with a track, and cars that roll down it. It teaches prediction, which is a bigger skill than it sounds: the child works out that the car will reach the bottom before it gets there. We do not stock a toy ramp racer today. It is a lovely toy and it sells well in Europe, but the wooden versions need a long flat run and they take up more shelf space than the rest of this list put together, which is why we have not carried one. If that changes, we will say so here.
Which Wooden Toy for Which Age
Age labels on a toy box are about safety, not about learning. So this table does two jobs: it tells you what is safe at each age, and it tells you what that age actually enjoys. Childrens wooden toys are unusual in this respect, because what changes between one year and four years is not the wood at all. The material stays the same and the piece size, the number of parts and the complexity of the task change around it. That is why one wooden board can be dangerous at ten months and perfect at two years.
| Age | What is safe | What they actually enjoy |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1 year | Unpainted or oiled wood, no parts smaller than a ₹2 coin, no strings | Thick shapes to hold, roll and chew. A single wooden ring beats a busy board |
| 1 to 2 years | Chunky knob puzzles, first peg boards, push and pull toys | Taking things out and putting them back. Repetition is the game |
| 2 to 3 years | Peg boards, shape sorters, first stacked blocks | Sorting, naming and matching. This is the peak wooden toy age |
| 3 to 5 years | Alphabet boards, tracing boards, blocks, simple strategy games | Pretending, building to a plan, and being given a real task |
Wooden Toys Near Me: How to Find Us in Bengaluru
Most people typing wooden toys near me in Bangalore are not looking for a longer list. They want to know whether they can walk in today, pick the thing up, and look at it in daylight before paying. That is a reasonable thing to want, because a wooden toy is one of the very few purchases where a photograph hides the one thing that matters: how the surface feels in your hand.
So yes, we are a wooden toy shop near me that you can actually walk into. BugBee Toys is on the first floor at 205/A, 55th Cross, opposite ABC Park, 4th Block, Rajajinagar. If every result you found for wooden toy store near me turned out to be an online marketplace with a warehouse you cannot enter, this is the difference. Come and put two boards side by side and tap them. You will learn more in four minutes than in an hour of reading.
| Address | 1st Floor, 205/A, 55th Cross, Opposite ABC Park, 4th Block, Rajajinagar, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560010 |
| Phone / WhatsApp | 99860 03534 |
| Opening hours | Monday to Sunday, 10:00am to 8:00pm |

One thing worth saying plainly, because it comes up on every call: BugBee Toys has exactly one shop. There is no second branch, no Jayanagar outlet and no Indiranagar counter, so if you have seen a wooden toys listing with our name further away from the city, it is not us. Come to Rajajinagar or order online and let us deliver. We would rather say that clearly than let you drive across Bengaluru for nothing.
| Coming from | Roughly |
|---|---|
| Rajajinagar, Basaveshwaranagar, Malleshwaram | 5 to 20 minutes |
| Vijayanagar, Nagarbhavi, Yeshwanthpur | 15 to 30 minutes |
| Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Koramangala, Indiranagar | 35 to 55 minutes |
| Whitefield, Electronic City, HSR Layout, Yelahanka | 50 to 75 minutes |
People arrive at us through four slightly different searches, and it is worth naming them, because they mean different things. Typing wooden toyshop gets you a shop that sells wood. Typing wooden toy shop and walking in gets you the shelf. Searching for a wood toy shop near me usually means you want it today, not next week. And wood toys near me is the shortest version of the same question a parent types one handed while holding a child. All four land in the same place, and all four are answered by the address above rather than by a longer page. If you would rather shop wooden toys with your hands than through a screen, that is exactly what the shop is for. One visit and you will never guess at a wood type again.
Channapatna: The Wooden Toys Karnataka Has Been Making for Two Centuries
If you have been looking for wooden toys in Bangalore for any length of time, you have run into the word Channapatna. It is worth understanding, because it is the reason Karnataka has a wooden toy tradition at all rather than just a wooden toy market.
Channapatna is a small town about 60 kilometres from Bengaluru, out past Ramanagara, and it is famous enough for its wooden toys that it is known as the toy town of Karnataka. The craft has a geographic indication tag, which is a formal recognition that the style belongs to that place and nowhere else. The toys are turned on a hand lathe, coloured with vegetable dyes rather than industrial paint, and finished with a lacquer that is safe for a child to put in their mouth. The look is unmistakable: rounded shapes, soft glossy colour, no sharp edges anywhere. A woodshop toy made this way also carries slight variation from piece to piece, because a hand lathe does not repeat itself perfectly, and two stacker rings from the same batch will differ by a millimetre or two. Not every parent notices. The ones who do tend to be the ones who come back for a second piece. The craft is believed to have been brought to the region in the eighteenth century, and it has survived into an era of plastic mostly because generations of families kept doing it.
So when you are deciding what to buy, you are choosing between three things: mass-produced wooden toys, imported ones, and the local craft tradition. They are not the same purchase, and the price difference is not only about wood. Ask a shop which of the three they are selling you. BugBee team: confirm whether any of your current stock is Channapatna sourced, and from which artisan or unit. If it is, this section becomes one of the strongest trust signals on the site. If it is not, tell us and we will rewrite this section to point customers towards the craft honestly.
Buying Wooden Toys in Bulk and Wholesale
Schools, playschools, activity centres, gifting companies and resellers buy wooden toys from us by the carton, and the questions are always identical. So here they are, answered in one place.
| What you need | How it works with us |
|---|---|
| A handful for a small event | Retail price, straight off the shelf, no minimum |
| A full carton of one item | Carton pricing kicks in. Confirm your minimum order quantity |
| Mixed cartons across several ranges | Possible, and usually what playschools want. Price depends on the mix |
| Repeat annual orders for a school | Tell us the term dates and we will plan stock around them |
What to send us for a quote
Three things and we can price it the same day: how many pieces you need, the age of the children they are for, and your budget per piece. Send those on WhatsApp and you will get photographs of the actual stock plus a per-unit and per-carton price, not a catalogue PDF.
If you are comparing wooden toy suppliers for a school
One thing matters more than the per piece price, and it is not on most quote sheets: whether the same item will still exist next term. A playschool that buys fifty stacked towers in June and needs fifty more in January has a problem if the supply has moved on to a different range, because forty children will notice within a day. Ask any of the wooden toy suppliers you are comparing what their continuity looks like across a full academic year. We hold the same core ranges year round, and we would rather tell you that plainly than win one carton on price.
Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers, including the ones where the honest answer is no.
BugBee Toys is at 1st Floor, 205/A, 55th Cross, opposite ABC Park, 4th Block, Rajajinagar, Bengaluru 560010. It is the only BugBee store in the city, and it is open seven days. You can see and handle every range before buying.
How much should I expect to pay for a wooden toy?In our shop, ₹199 for a small puzzle up to ₹1,499 for a large block set. Most parents land somewhere between ₹399 and ₹799. If a solid wood toy is priced under about ₹150, look closely at the material, because at that price it is very often MDF.
Are wooden toys really safer than plastic ones? Not automatically. A wooden toy is safer when the paint is non-toxic and the finish is child-safe, because there are no phthalates or BPA to worry about. A cheap painted wooden toy can be worse than a well-made plastic one. Ask about the paint and the finish before you ask about anything else.
My child chews everything. Is wooden safe for a teething baby?Bare or oiled wood with no paint is the safest option at that stage, and it is why we keep unpainted pieces. Avoid anything with a varnish that smells strongly, and avoid small parts entirely. A plain wooden ring or a chunky unpainted shape is a reasonable teething object. It is not a substitute for a purpose-made teether, though.
How do I clean a wooden toy without ruining it?A damp cloth with a little mild soap, wiped dry immediately. Never soak wood and never put it in a dishwasher, because water swells the grain and lifts the paint. For anything that needs real sanitising, use a diluted vinegar wipe and dry it straight away. Full method on our wooden toy cleaning guide.
Do wooden toys splinter? They can, at the edges and on any unsanded cutout, especially on cheaper pieces where the final sanding step was skipped. That is why we suggest running a bare hand along every edge before buying. Wood that has been properly finished should feel smooth rather than gritty, and the risk drops a lot once the toy is a few years old and the edges have worn.
Why are wooden toys so much more expensive than plastic?Because almost every step is done by a person rather than a machine: cutting, sanding, drilling, painting, finishing. Add child-safe paint and a proper finish on top, and the material cost is a small part of the total. The trade-off is that well-made wood survives drops that crack plastic, so a ₹600 wooden board that lasts four years can cost less per year than three ₹250 plastic ones.
Which wooden toy is best for a first birthday?A chunky knob puzzle or a small peg board. At twelve months a child is working on grip, and a peg is the easiest thing in the world for a small hand to hold. Avoid anything with loose parts under three centimetres. If you want one gift that will still be in use at three years old, an activity triangle is the better spend, but it is also the bigger spend.
Do you deliver wooden toys across Bangalore?Yes, across Bengaluru, and you can also order online for delivery. For large or heavy items it is worth messaging us first so we can tell you the realistic timing rather than a generic promise. Confirm the current window per zone.
Can I order one piece, or is there a minimum? One piece, no minimum. Walk in and buy a single puzzle, or write to us for a carton. The only thing that changes with volume is the price, not whether we will sell to you.
Do you have wooden toys for 2 year olds specifically?Yes, and two is the best age in the whole category. A two-year-old can hold a peg, understands that things have names, and will happily sort and stack for twenty minutes. Peg boards, shape sorters and first block stacks are what we sell most at that age.
Is Channapatna wooden toy stock available with you?BugBee team: answer this one honestly, and only if it is true. If you do stock Channapatna pieces, say which ones and where the artisan work comes from. If you do not, say no and offer the closest range you do keep.
Can I buy in bulk for resale?Yes. We supply resellers and small shops. If you run a physical shop, a market stall or a wood toys store online, message us on WhatsApp with what you want to stock and where you are selling, and we will send the per-carton price and the minimum. If you are outside Bengaluru, say so early, because freight changes the numbers.
Come and Hold One Before You Decide
Send us the age of the child and your budget, and we will put two or three options aside so they are ready when you walk in. No obligation, and no push to buy the most expensive one.
Buy one good wooden toy, not three cheap ones.
An affordable wooden toy is one you only buy once. A ₹599 wooden board that lasts four years will outlive three plastic toys that cost the same. Come in, hold both, and let your hand make the decision. That is the entire reason we kept a physical shop.
